Downtown Martinez & Co. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the economic vitality of Downtown Martinez. Through strategic planning, marketing initiatives, and community events, we work to foster a thriving and welcoming downtown district that serves as a vibrant destination for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Position Overview
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of Downtown Martinez & Co., including operations, strategic planning, fundraising, event coordination, marketing, and community relations. The ED works closely with the Board of Directors, city officials, business owners, and community stakeholders to ensure the success and sustainability of Downtown Martinez.
This role requires a high level of professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive community. Candidates must demonstrate a collaborative leadership style, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to engage with diverse perspectives constructively.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Management
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of Downtown Martinez & Co., ensuring the organization runs efficiently and in alignment with its mission.
• Serve as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors, city officials, local businesses, and community partners.
• Manage staff, volunteers, and committees to support events, marketing, and economic development initiatives.
Community Engagement & Stakeholder Relations
• Foster and maintain positive relationships with business owners, property owners, city leadership, and community groups to ensure alignment on downtown development goals.
• Serve as a visible and engaged leader in the community, attending city meetings, networking events, and business gatherings.
• Demonstrate openness to collaboration, active listening, and a solutions-oriented approach to community concerns.
Economic Development & Advocacy
• Advocate for policies and programs that support a strong downtown business environment.
• Collaborate with city officials and economic development partners on projects that enhance downtown vitality.
• Support efforts to attract and retain businesses in Downtown Martinez.
Event Planning & Marketing
• Oversee the planning, promotion, and execution of events that drive foot traffic and community engagement.
• Work with staff and partners to implement marketing strategies that highlight Downtown Martinez as a destination.
Fundraising & Financial Management
• Secure funding through sponsorships, grants, membership programs, and fundraising initiatives.
• Manage the organization’s budget, ensuring financial sustainability and transparency.
• Oversee financial reporting and compliance with nonprofit regulations.
Required Qualifications
• 5 years of leadership experience in nonprofit management, economic development, downtown revitalization, municipal government, or a related field.
• Strong understanding of downtown business districts, economic development principles, and community-building strategies.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders while maintaining a high level of professionalism and diplomacy.
• Experience in event planning, marketing, and public relations.
• Ability to manage budgets, secure sponsorships, and oversee fundraising efforts.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and community outreach.
• A commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive organizational culture.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Marketing, or a related field.
• Experience working with a Board of Directors.
• Knowledge of grant writing and nonprofit fundraising strategies.
• Familiarity with Martinez or a similar downtown environment.
Compensation & Benefits
• Salary range: $80,000 - $95,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience
• Benefits: health care and cell phone stipend with retirement contribution
• Flexible schedule with evening/weekend event commitments as needed.
