First fridays

First Fridays is a monthly celebration of art, music, and community, bringing the streets of Downtown Martinez to life on the first Friday of each month. Part of a nationwide tradition, our Martinez edition is designed to highlight local talent while inviting visitors to discover the charm of our historic downtown. Each month, you’ll find artists and makers showcasing their work, live performances and art installations, children dancing and crafting and our  small shops, galleries, restaurants, and bars opening their doors with special offerings. First Fridays is more than an event—it’s a chance to connect, explore, and support the creative heart of Martinez.

Bernadette Fernandes has been at the heart of First Fridays in Downtown Martinez since the summer of 2023. While the First Fridays concept is celebrated in cities across the nation, Bernadette has shaped our local version into something uniquely Martinez—an opportunity for artists in our community to showcase their talent and share their work with you, while also inviting you to explore the small shops, galleries, restaurants, bars, and businesses that make our downtown vibrant. She has added live art, kids activities and so much more!

As an artist, business owner, and devoted community organizer, Bernadette brings creativity and connection to everything she does. Through her business, Busywork Craft Supply, she has built a welcoming hub for makers and creatives from across the Bay Area—fostering collaboration, inspiration, and a true sense of community. Bernadette and the First Fridays team are always looking to collaborate and partner with organizations, groups, and individuals who create and celebrate art in all its forms.
